Mark Grandfield

New Jersey native Mark Grandfield grew up in the '60s, moved to NYC in the '80s, and began singing blues and soul. He also did voice overs and sang jingles on numerous television commercials. 

About his early years growing up in New Jersey, Mr. Grandfield says "My mother loved music and always encouraged me, and my older sister listened to the British Invasion, Stax and Motown. We also had a bin full of Sinatra, Harry Belafonte, Nat Cole, and Bing Crosby records.”

In the first hour of the show, we'll hear Mr. Grandfield's cover of Cole Porter's Every Time We Say Goodbye.  We'll hear it again by John Coltrane, playing the soprano sax - the first version I recall hearing of this beautiful song. 

The second hour will feature a song made popular by the great Tony Bennett - I Wanna Be Around. Listen to the lyrics - what a great revenge song! This will follow a track from one of Mr. Bennett's purest jazz albums, his collaboration with the incomparable Bill Evans from 1975.

You may have heard the Musician's Corner with Ms. Grubbs. Her new CD The Sound of Love is superb. I thought I had listened to all the best tracks on this release - and there are many - and then I found one more that I missed. And it is a beauty. Listen to Two For The Road at the end of the second set, right after Fred Hersch's new release.
 
I guess this is to say, don't miss this show! There is too much great new music to not hear!

Buster

Attention Worcester jazz lovers! This is not a reference to a certain crab that rests atop a certain restaurant on Highland Street! No, this is the jazz Buster - Buster Williams. He will appear with an all-star lineup at Clark University's Geller concert on April 16. The lineup is: Nicholas Payton, Benito Gonzalez, Buster Williams, & Lenny White. The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Gabriel Espinosa: From Yucatán to Tarrytown Air Date: 7/7/2024 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET I'm impressed with the lineup of artists appearing at Mark Morganelli's Jazz Forum in Tarrytown, New York. Recently Gabriel Espinosa performed with his superb band. In the photo above, we see Mr. Espinosa feeling the bass, with drummer Graciliano Zambonin reacting to the groove of the moment. When I looked at the song list, I was reassured and impressed upon finding Duke Ellington's Sound of Love . Her take on this song is masterful. During her Musician's Corner interview, she will talk about two songs on the new CD, Tadd Dameron's If You Could See Me Now , and an original composition entitled The Sculptor's Hands .  What I noticed about Mrs Grubbs is that she finds new ways to express standards from the Great American Songbook.
