So many listeners have mentioned how much they like the jazz piano they hear on the Sunday Jazz Brunch. I am a big fan of piano trios in particular. I don't think this format gets much airtime, anywhere. I believe that enjoying jazz piano trios can be an acquired taste. Certainly, when you have a trio playing old favorites - well, everybody likes that. But stray just a little from the well-worn path, and most folks take the exit ramp. 

In this show we'll cover a good slice of the spectrum, keeping it right where the educated jazz fan wants it to be. This is not a 'best of' show, as I am not trying to fit all of the greatest pianists into a few hours. I guess you could say it is a 'favorites show,' but not quite, since I didn't come up with a list of my favorites and then play them for you. Rather, I just looked through our music database, and when I found a piece with piano that I like, I pulled it. And so we have a mix of old and new, as well as various formats. Including trios of course.

Here is an off-the-top-of-my-head take on many of the artists you'll hear during this show.

John Lee: I am digging his new CD. Young man makes good. I love it.

Steve Kuhn: Dang he's great. Steve, I miss you.

Steve Million: Superb Chicago-based pianist/composer doesn't get enough attention. 

Rossano Sportiello: Very fluid style and a cute song.

Noah Haidu: Love his work with Buster Williams.

Randy Weston: What an interesting style! Reminds me of Thelonius.

Mike Longo: Love his material from the early aughts.

McCoy: Great early work from one of The Trio with Coltrane and Elvin.

Enrico Pieranunzi: Italian keyboardist - another who doesn't get enough attention.

Luther Allison: Excellent new work from the young pianist.

Leslie Pintchik: Great to see you in New Rochelle Leslie!

Josh Nelson: Everybody wants to play with this versatile west-coast artist.

Larry Willis: Classic piano trio from a great one.

Kandace Springs: Vocalist with piano chops.

Eliane Elias: Pianist with vocal chops.

Diana Krall: Extremely popular pianist/vocalist. 

Alfredo Cardim: My favorite Brazilian piano trio.

Alan Broadbent: You know how much I love this guy.

Bill Cunliffe: Superb modern player.

Bill Mays: A pianist's pianist.

Errol Garner: No, I won't play Misty for you.

The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Gabriel Espinosa: From Yucatán to Tarrytown Air Date: 7/7/2024 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET I'm impressed with the lineup of artists appearing at Mark Morganelli's Jazz Forum in Tarrytown, New York. Recently Gabriel Espinosa performed with his superb band. In the photo above, we see Mr. Espinosa feeling the bass, with drummer Graciliano Zambonin reacting to the groove of the moment. Four or five names pop up on Wikipedia, mostly violin players who also happen to occasionally play viola.
