Our guests on the next Musician's Corner are the two founding members of the Music Soup Organ Trio: Nestor Dimopoulos, guitar and Evgenia Karlafti, organ and keys. Hailing from Athens, Greece, and together since 2013, the trio has just released their new CD, Upbeat Mood. The CD contains all original songs, except for one Burt Bacharach number, My Little Red Book.

Evgenia started her musical career as a classical pianist. However, when she met Tony Monaco at a summer camp, she switched to jazz! Mr. Dimopoulos also began classically trained, on guitar. The two started playing together in 2006, and their drummer, Vagelis Kotzabasis, joined them in 2013.

It has been opined that Music Soup Organ Trio proves that there is 'jazz of an Olympian standard' going on in Greece. Tune in to the next Musician's Corner to find out for yourself!

The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Gabriel Espinosa: From Yucatán to Tarrytown Air Date: 7/7/2024 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET I'm impressed with the lineup of artists appearing at Mark Morganelli's Jazz Forum in Tarrytown, New York. Recently Gabriel Espinosa performed with his superb band. In the photo above, we see Mr. Espinosa feeling the bass, with drummer Graciliano Zambonin reacting to the groove of the moment. Four or five names pop up on Wikipedia, mostly violin players who also happen to occasionally play viola. Add to this, over the many thousands of CDs I have listened to during my tenure at WICN, I do not recall ever coming across a jazz viola player.  Until now.
