The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents

It's Different

Air Date: 12/3/2023 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET  or later in the Archives

As I have discovered over the years trying to play jazz guitar, learning to play an instrument is extremely humbling. It seems you never quite reach an endpoint. Once you feel like maybe you have achieved something, it simultaneously becomes clear that there is so much more. I hear this sentiment echoed by professional artists who, as far as I am concerned, have reached a fabulous endpoint. Yet they continue to learn and grow, and reach a more fabulous endpoint.

'A great musician is always learning, evolving, and searching for new ideas.'

- Bill Evans

‘It's taken me all my life to learn what not to play.’

- Dizzy Gillespie

The effort is worthwhile, however. Something I found when learning to play a song is that playing the song is different from simply listening. Songs that I love, I love even more. Songs that I think "meh" can suddenly become "wow!" when played.

I believe the same thing applies to the relationship between you and your favorite radio station, WICN. You can simply listen, of course. Just turn on the radio or connect on the internet. It's free.

But guess what. If you become a member of our jazz+ family, the music sounds different. Yes, better!

You know how sometimes the same environment can look frightening and uncomfortable at one time, or beautiful and welcoming at another, depending on your state of mind. We know that simply listening to the great music we play is wonderful. But it can be more wonderful.

See if this works for you. Give a call on Sunday between 8am and 12pm ET at 508-752-0700 and pledge your support. Yes, during the Sunday Jazz Brunch. If you prefer, call as you read this and mention that you'd like to support SJB with a pledge. Finally, you can click here to get to our online form. In the 'testimonial' section you can tell us how you feel about WICN and SJB.

Then we can decide if the music sounds better. I bet it will.

I look forward to you becoming part of our jazz+ family at WICN. Thanks for your support!

Marty
